Writing Class

I don't think I write about my Creative Writing class enough. And since I just got back from it, I guess now is a good time to write about it.
Pretty much the entire class consists of reading our poems and short stories aloud. And then commenting on them.
No one told me that we read everything aloud. So before I discovered that, I turned in two poems that didn't think other people would care to hear. Well, now I know. One of them was pretty well accepted. But for the other, I completely forgot to make it rhyme. I thought she said we didn't need to rhyme. Usually I like rhyming too. XP Hopefully I won't make any other stupid mistakes. Though I doubt anyone else thought it was nearly as stupid a mistake as I did.
Most of the people in the class are very good writers. Unlike my last creative writing class, which was entirely students, many of which had rather bad grammar. These people are much more skilled, and a lot of them are beyond being in school. They're just in the class because they're passionate about writing. So that's definitely nice. I shouldn't be surprised about it. Band there is the same way.
I have joined Scott among the group of wild guys. So I'm never bored (I always end up with wild people. It's more fun that way). XD Guess I've got some new friends now too. Oh, crud, I need to remember that one guy's name... I'm so terrible at names!! I feel so horrible when I can't remember a person's name. Especially when they know mine.
The class is broken into three main sections. I'm in the first one, since this is my first time in the class. The first class is a combo of poetry and prose. There's some sort of poem due almost every week. And although I like writing poems, I'm afraid I'll run out of things to write about. Because I usually reserve poems for when I feel very eloquent about something (like the fog I sometimes drive through, which is really cool). So I need to look around for subjects that I can be fancy about. I can only think of one more...
I turned in my first short story a few weeks ago. And today I turned in my edit of it, and my self-critique. And I think I finally decided on a topic for my second short story. While I have many many ideas, very few of them are ones I can fit into the small page limit. Especially since our prose has to be 14 font. That really threw me off for my first story.
And in my section, everyone critiques one story for someone else. So I turned in my critique today.
And people bring in food. Whoo! Free food!

Katani First Chapter

I've been messing with Katani's first chapter for ages. I finally have it to a place that I feel pretty good with. Though I always think that for a while. And then I come back and look at it... and I hate it again.
Siiiiiiiigh.
I'm sure that's pretty common, but siiiiigh.
But I hope it's good. That's all I can do. Do my best, and hope that it's good.
Now I need to do the first chapter where Katani is introduced. Because the first first chapter is more like a prologue.
I've heard that prologues are usually not a great idea for a book. But I've read prologues that I like. And I think my prologue is important to set up the story and a lot of the characters.
Perhaps some day I'll have to trash it. But even so, it's helpful to me. And would make an interesting short background story. So even if I don't use it, I still want it to be good.

Oscars

I was debating about whether or not to post about the Oscars. Mainly because I knew I'd complain about them.
The thing about the Oscars, is that I always vote for the movies I've seen that I like. For example, if I loved a movie that had horrible makeup, I'd be voting for it to win best makeup.
This is the first time I watched the Oscars all the way through.
Best animated picture. Why does Pixar always win? Don't get me wrong. I usually love Pixar. But that does not mean that they need to win best animated picture every single year. I think I actually liked Wreck-it-Ralph better than Brave. Although Brave had beautiful animation, Wreck-it-Ralph was much more creative. I wish Rise of the Guardians was nominated. Though I suppose I can understand why it wasn't.
I'm glad Paper Man won best animated short though. That was a great one. So was the short before Brave.
Ahhhhhh, when the cast of Les Mis started singing One Day More, I started to get really excited. I love love LOVE that song. I thought they were only going to sing Suddenly. How could they not win Best Song after that beautiful performance? TT^TT
Life of Pi got some good stuff. That was a pretty impressive movie too. And the actor that did Lincoln sure did an amazing job. But I was voting for Jean Valjean for Best Actor. It's too bad that Lincoln and Les Miserables came out the same year, or Jackman would have definitely won. I mean, the guy didn't drink anything for THREE DAYS STRAIGHT in order to look so gaunt during the beginning (I've been watching a bunch of interviews from the movie).
Anne Hathaway sure deserved best supporting actress.
I was voting Les Mis for best picture. Sigh. Even though I've never seen Argo, I am annoyed that it won. Aren't I biased? (I still get annoyed when I remember that Avatar didn't win Best Picture).

Some Wicked Music!

My aunt and uncle went to see Wicked last week with my cousin, Beau. I knew that Beau liked Wicked, but he said he wasn't able to go with us. So I'm glad that he got to see it. My aunt and uncle didn't really know anything about it, but they liked it a lot.
My uncle said he wasn't too interested in the music though. Which surprised me, because I love most of it. And when I played "For Good" for Dad, he sad he wasn't too crazy about that music either.
But I get what they mean, since they're probably thinking about it from a classical music sort or perspective. And the strength of Wicked's music is mainly in the lyrics. The words, rhyming, and meaning of the songs are just amazing. And when you're in a theater, or listening to a song for the first time, it's pretty much impossible to hear every word and understand exactly what's being said. I've listened to the songs over and over, and also read through the lyrics (since there are a few nonsensical words, such as "disgustingified") so I've had plenty of time to feel the meaning in them. Plus Elphaba is amazing to listen to.
I figured I'd talk about some of the things I love in the Wicked soundtrack. And share some of my favorite phrases. I'll avoid writing all of them. (There may be a few minor spoilers).

The Wizard and I
In this song, she says that she has a vision. A vision about all of Oz having a celebration about her. Which comes true. Everyone celebrates the fact that she's dead. Man, that's so sad!
And she also thinks that the Wizard can make her not be green anymore, although that's not really important. Except it obviously is important to her, since she's fantasizing about it. Which makes me wonder how much she's trying to fool herself about her green skin (How do you think you'd react if you met someone green?).
"So happy I could melt." Such unfortunate foreshadowing...
"When people see me they will scream." Again, unfortunate foreshadowing. Poor Elphie.

What is This Feeling
Yesterday, I started singing the beginning of this song:

"What is this feeling
So sudden and new
I felt the moment
I laid eyes on you
My pulse is rushing
My head is reeling
My face is rushing
Oh, what is this feeling?"

And Dad said, "that's what I thought the first time I saw your Mom."
And I looked at him really weird as I continued to sing

Fervid as a flame
Does it have a name?
Yeeeees,
LOATHING!

At which Dad started laughing.
It really does sound like it could be the start of a love song. And yet it's not. Not by a long shot.
And then there's a line where the students say that they don't mean to be biased. Hah! Yeah right. There's a couple of these obvious contradictions in these songs. It's cool, because it's so obvious that they're lying.
And then they call Galinda a martyr, and she basically says that Elphaba was "sent to try her." Jeez. If someone said that about me, I would want to smack them so badly.
I don't get how a song about hating someone can be so fun to sing. But since they end up as friends, it's all okay.
And I love the overlapping melodies that happen later in the song. That kind of stuff is so awesome (Like The Confrontation in Les Mis).
(Galinda's little squeak at the end is so funny. ^o^ )

Dancing Through Life
This is one of the examples of freaking awesome rhyming.
There's some cool lines in this one. Like "Life's more painless for the brainless." And "those who don't try never look foolish."
Poor Boq.
And poor Nessa!
I still think this line is hilarious: "You deserve each other, this hat and you!" Poor Elphaba. Her fashion sense is even worse than mine. Well... maybe about the same.

Popular
"Celebrated heads of state
Or specially great communicators
Did they have brains of knowledge?
Don't make me laugh!
They were popular!"

Which is probably more true than I wish it were.

I'm not that Girl
There's some great phrases in this one.
"Hearts leap in a giddy whirl."
I love that image.

"Every so often we long to steal
To the land of what-might-have-been
But that doesn't soften the ache we feel
When reality sets back in."

Defying Gravity
Definitely one of my favorite songs. Here's my favorite parts of it.

"Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts,
Close my eyes and leap!"

"I'm through accepting limits
Cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change,
But till I try I'll never know.
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I'd lost
Well if that's love,
It comes at much too high a cost!"

Thank Goodness

"But I couldn't be happier
Simply couldn't be happier
Well, not simply.
Cause getting your dreams
It's strange, but it seems
A little, well, complicated.
There's a kind of a sort of cost
There's a couple of things get lost
There are bridges you cross
You didn't know you crossed
Until you've crossed
And if that joy, that thrill
Doesn't thrill you like you think it will"

"Because happy is what happens
When all your dreams come true
Well, isn't it?"

Wonderful
"A man's called a traitor, or a liberator
A rich man's a thief or philanthropist.
Is one a crusader or ruthless invader?
It's all in which label
Is able to persist."

No Good Deed
The chanting she does sounds really cool.

"One question haunts and hurts
Too much, too much to mention
Was I really seeking good
Or just seeking attention?
Is that all good deeds are
When looked at with an ice-cold eye?
If that's all good deeds are,
Maybe that's the reason why
No good deed goes unpunished!"

For Good
Another of my favorites. It's a beautiful song. I'll resist writing the entire thing here.

"I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are lead
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you."

"Like a comet pulled from orbit as it passes a sun"

"So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
by being my friend."

Elphaba: "And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the things I've done you blame me for."
Glinda: "But then I guess we know there's blame to share
And none of it seems to matter anymore."

Who can say if I've been changed forever
I do believe I have been changed forever
And because I knew you,
I have been changed for good."

Heheh. By the end I seem to have mainly just quoted the songs, but I think the words do a fine job of speaking for themselves.

Ni no Kuni

For ages I've been looking at the pictures from the Ni no Kuni game - the one that studio Ghibli helped animate. And it looks freaking amazing and there are awesome creatures in it. I've been looking forward to playing it so much, since Japan had a DS version. I just discovered that it was finally released in America.

AND IT'S ONLY ON PS3.

@SFR!!ESTF#!@FRSARE$$#!@#%#@$&*#@#FDRE@$$#@!@#!@#@!FDF@#@!#$@#$!

Why is on only for PS3? WHYYYYYYY?
I want to play it! I've been looking forwards to it for ages, and now I can't play it because they didn't release it for the console that I actually own.

Teeth

Happy chocolate dayyyy!!!!
See's candy truffles. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Soooo good.

Two nights ago, I got home from spending a couple days with my grandparents. Grandma had cataract surgery, so I was driving her where she needed to go and helping around the house.
When I got home, I discovered a big lump against Alaska's jaw. And I started getting really scared. Alaska's about 10 years old, which is old for a rabbit. She already has problems with her ears and her foreleg.
We took her down to the vet today. I was soooooooooo relieved to learn that it was just an absessed tooth. We need to give her meds, which will hopefully reduce most of the swelling. But jeez. I'm so glad it wasn't something much worse. So I guess that's my valentines gift (besides chocolate from Mom and Dad). Knowing that Alaska doesn't have anything really bad.

Today Mom went to the dentist and had an old filling taken out and a new half-tooth put in.
Dad went to the dentist today, and needs to go back next week to get a tooth pulled out.
And Alaska'a absessed tooth.
Plus Grandma's cataract surgery on Monday.
And I burned my arm on Saturday night. It's healing well and doesn't hurt unless I bump it. but there's a nice big red patch there. It's really weird to look at.
Man, what is with that? I guess everyone in the family is working off karma.

Short Story

We had two assignments due last week for our creative writing class. One of them was a sonnet. I've written a couple of those before so it wasn't too hard. And we didn't have to write in iambic pentameter (well, at least we didn't have to do the iambic part. But I did a bit anyway. It's interesting to figure out the rhythms). Since tomorrow is valentines day, I figured I'd try for a sort of love-themed sonnet. Since sonnets are often ramancey anyway. Although it's not really about romance, but about wondering how to get to romance. I guess. Something like that.
We also had a short story due. Very short. Less than 5 pages, double-spaced, 14 font. I pulled out a short 2-page thing I wrote over a year ago and never did anything with. I re-wrote it and turned it in. I'll probably have to read it in class tomorrow. We read things aloud during most of class. Everyone gets copies of the poems/stories so they can read along. So, there's a lot of paper. I draw random pictures while I listen. XD
We have another poem thing due tomorrow. Except the directions are really vague. It doesn't seem to be an actual form? I'd better figure it out soon though.

Cinquain

I guess I should post about our first creative writing assignment, which was due two weeks ago.
It was called a cinquain.
Cinguains are very short. They're only five lines, with a handful of words. Your challenge is to pack as much image/emotion/power in there in as few words as possible. Brief and concise.
There are a few ways to do a cinquain.

First line: 1 word
Second line: 2 words
Third line: 3 words
Fourth line: 4 words
Fifth line: 1 word

First line: noun
Second line: 2 adjectives
Third line: 3 -ing words
Fourth line: a phrase
Fifth line: another word for the noun

First line: 2 syllables
Second line: 4 syllables
Third line: 6 syllables
Fourth line: 8 syllables
Fifth line: 2 syllables

They're fun to play around with. I tried one of each kind, working with the same theme because I was lazy.

Blossoms
Thick and sweet
Nesting close together
Nestled against fragile twigs
Perfume

Petals
Pale, delicate
Drifting, floating, alighting
Cloud flakes fallen from heaven
Bloom

Cherry
Blooming cloudburst
Cotton covered hillside
Clouds painted by a sinking sun
Blossom

Class

So, I have an entire free semester before I do the creative writing grad program (assuming I get in. Still won't know until March). So, in addition to band, I figured I'd take a creative writing class. I kept forgetting to post about it, but that's because it wasn't until today that I was officially enrolled. That's because I had to jump through all the hoops of transferring proof of my English courses from my first college to the community college near my house. And they never told me that my paperwork was accepted, so by the time I figured it out, I had to do a late add. Which meant two separate trips to the campus and repeated visits to more than one office. I don't know why they have to make these sorts of things such a freaking pain.
But, I should be officially enrolled now. I'd better double check with the teacher though.
We've had three classes so far (two actually, because one was canceled due to the teacher being bed-ridden).
On the first day of class, I walked through the door, and heard my name called. Imagine my surprised to find one of my high school friends in the class! A double surprise, because I didn't even know that he wrote. So, that makes the class all the more fun.
I'll post about some of the assignments eventually. We've only had one so far, but there's two due this Thursday.

You guys took all the titles

This will be a lazy post. You have been...something...

Since everyone's posting about our recent story swap I guess i should too. Unfortunately you guys took all the titles for the titles of the posts so I don't know what to call mine....

Whatever.
Tired.  Sorry.  But Tara asked me to post so here it is.

Welp I challenged Panda to another story swap duel off on the side.  We bet. Heh. Heh. Ha. too tired to laugh.

She was supposed to finish her story swap of Tara's by the end of the month, and I was supposed to do what I had originally planned for the story swap (a rewritten version of an omitted beach scene in the beginning of the story).  I did it. Yay!  I don't know if I win the bet though.

We bet on completion.  I said I would finish up to the halfway equivalent of the original story (first complete draft) by the 31st.

But time difference screws with my head and so does the full time work thing.  So I sent it in early-ish.  Nothing like the threat of having to properly write the first chapter of your own story to get you writing something unrelated to your own work.

If only I could apply myself to my own stuff.....

Regardless, I finished only to a quarter time equivalent of the original.  In terms of story time I reached to page thirty something...and added a bunch of events and what not.

If you want to see it Tara, let me know.

Wa ha ha ha ha twenty something pages of writing in one night! I guarantee nothing!!!!!! Slightly sleep deprived.  Writing, insomnia, work, and work again early tomorrow, then a party cause I in all of my smartness agreed to go last week.......so lazy...

Um...yeah.  Word barf (the art of typing nonsensical stories onto paper in large quantities) is my specialty.  Again I guarantee nothing! Especially since my writing program lacks a spellcheck...completely.  I can add my own library, word by painstaking word...including 'the' 'of' 'and' and other simple words....lazy.  Can't guarantee grammar either!!! But that's only because no one ever bothered to teach me proper grammar! Ah ha ha ha ha...too tired to laugh...

I should sleep...but first I need to clean and eat...and pick up my clothes...and laundry...oh and I need to buy food...

I'll do it later...

Wow this just turned into a rambling complaint about my life...I'm sorry.  I hope everyone's lives are going just as great as mine.  I am fully aware my life is a cakewalk compared to everyone else's lives, so thank you everyone else for living lives significantly worse than mine so I can feel better.

Hm...where did that come from? Too tired to go back and delete it. I promised a post.  I did not promise a post that made any sense.  Tried to make it related to writing...kinda worked...maybe...no, not really...oh well...
