Naming Mix-Ups

A while ago, I wrote a post bemoaning the fact that I gave three of my main characters very similar names. Arith, Arrin, and Ashlyn. I also said I'd probably have to change Arrin's name. But I really don't want to.

Right now, I'm writing a short story with Arrin. And I'm calling her "Rinn" to hide the fact that her name is too much like the others. Except I keep forgetting and calling her Arrin.

Either way, I'm probably just delaying the inevitable.

Reindeers are Better on Stage

For Christmas, Nick got tickets to the Frozen stage play.  And he invited me along. I was excited that they had a live orchestra. And of course they had a whole choir.Live music is the best.

Although I think the best feature was the awesome reindeer. Sven was beautiful.

I didn't expect it to be so different from the movie. They changed the order of things so that Let it Go would lead to intermission. Which makes sense (a blatant steal of Defying Gravity! But let's face it - Let it Go always was. And they're both freaking awesome songs). The play had relatively little dialogue and they added a ton of songs. Plus they took out some songs. And Anna was more extreme in her weirdness (the little girl that played kid Anna was amazing).

I also didn't expect a full nude song and dance.

The singers were good, but not fantastic. Though that didn't stop me from singing "Summertime" during intermission. The people sitting nearby just ignored me. And Nick's used to me being weird.

It's fascinating to see how they adapt a story for stage, though I think they changed this one more than usual (maybe? I only know a few stage plays).

Of course on the drive out, we listened to the original Frozen soundtrack.

Places Never Visited

I just wrote the first draft of a story that takes place in the Congo. I've never been to the Congo, so I'm worried about making the location convincing. Especially since I found myself drawing inspiration from the Amazon to write about an African village. I don't think a village in a flooded South American rain forest is going to be very much like a village in the African mountains.

I have a couple references that will help, though I need to go over them again to pull out helpful information. For example, Jane Goodal's writings of studying chimpanzees on Lake Tanganyika. And the Wildlife Conservation Network has some videos from an okapi conservation group in the Congo.

I wish I could go to the Congo easily. Though it's a rather troubled area (surprise, because Europeans screwed up the area). I need to do more research.

But research can never substitute for experiencing something first-hand.

And now I'm working on a short story that takes place in Kenya. All the same problems. But I have some potential research sources for this too.

Stories for the Young at Heart

I just stumbled across a line by Walt Disney. It went something like this:

Don't make movies for the young, but for the young at heart.

That's what I love: stories that you can enjoy them no matter how old you are. They're not dumbed down, but they're not overly violent or anything.

I mean, there are some exceptions. But I love the "young at heart" stories. I try to write that way too.

Time to throw some more animals at you!

Fluting Again

When Covid started, I had to step back from band and aikido. Indoor group activities.

Band restarted about a year ago. But you had to wear these weird masks that fit over your instrument. I can't breathe in a mask! I wouldn't have been able to play. Then last semester, they lifted the mask restriction. but I was still uneasy about being in a room full of people blowing on instruments. Plus I had the Peru trip prep that sucked up all my free time.

This semester, I'm finally going back. Tomorrow, in fact.

I've been kinda slacking on flute. I've definitely played, but recently I more or less abandoned it. I think because of all the prep for Peru and everything. I didn't play for months. And then I was afraid how bad I would sound when I picked up my flute again, so I stalled even more. I couldn't remember fingerings for scales or familiar tunes. But finally, with just a couple weeks until the new band semester, I put my flute together and played.

(Waka turning his flute into a lightsaber. Freaking awesome, ma cherie)

Muscle memory is an amazing thing. It was like I'd never left. I've never really been able to remember the fingerings for scales or tunes. When I start playing, it comes. If I try to think about the notes, I can't do it.

Though it will probably take some practice to get that fast work smooth again. You need to keep up on it to stay skilled.

Now I just have to find out how to fit aikido back in. How did I ever have time for all of it? I didn't. I just didn't have free time @_@

Welcome to Paldea

So, I've been playing Pokémon Violet. I got the gatito as my starter.

It's an impressive open-world game. I finally beat the league. It took me forever, because I was exploring everywhere (open world stuff is cool, but it also kinda over-complicates everything).

There are some cool new Pokémon. I love the snow leopard. You're not supposed to be able to catch the legendaries until you've unlocked all of Miraidon's powers. But somehow I managed to get Miraidon up on the last ledge by sheer stubbornness. And dumb luck. At that point, I had no idea which keys unlocked which legendaries. I just happened to get all of the right ones. So I unlocked this awesome snow leopard earlier than allowed. She was wandering around when I went into my menu. When I exited back out of the menu, I found her curled around me.

I liked that there wasn't anyone evil in this game. It was refreshing. The characters were all quirky and sweet. Nemona so much so that I almost expected her to turn on me at some point XD I liked the teachers. And I liked how the school addressed bullying without throwing any nasty Draco Malfoy characters in your face. Or having any of those Snape-like teachers (Snape may have secretly been a hero, for which I respect him, but he was a terrible teacher for children).

I guess they're not making game guides anymore? Those always helped me find all the little hidden stuff.

And this is probably the glitchiest game I've played.  @_@

A Beautiful, Mysterious Book

A story that took place in a library, many years ago. They had a bookcase near the front door that was full of books you could take home for free.

One book immediately caught my eye. It had a beautiful, bright embossed cover, and the text was in an unfamiliar and lovely alphabet (I think from the Middle East?). I admired the book, but put it back on the shelf. I couldn't read it, after all. It should go to someone who could appreciate what was inside. Not just someone who liked the cover. And yet after all this time, sometimes I think about that book. It would have been wasted on me, but it sure was pretty.

I wonder what was written in it. It's the kind of mystery that I want to use on a story someday.

Time for more animal photos!

This time we've got some invertebrates.

Playing as You

I just watched a Youtube video to see some of the expansion pass content for Breath of the Wild. It had commentary from the player, and he said a couple things that made me think.

There was one scene where you find out that one of the character loved Link (though you kinda already know that from the main story). And the narrator said, "Aaw, she really loved me." And then at a different point with a different character he said, "wow, he really hated my guts."

It occurred to me that I never think of Link as being "me." Even though I've played pretty much every game of his. Maybe because in the Zelda games, my choices don't change anything. The story remains the same whatever I do. Plus Link is an established character. Even if you never... really... hear him talk.

But the reverse is true for Pokémon. I almost always think of the playable character as being me. I think that must be because you can personalize the Pokémon games so much. After all, you're putting together and training a team. You get very attached to your little digital Pokémon. And while many of the playable characters have names and stories in the manga or anime, they don't have a lot of personal information available in the games. And more recently, you can change the design of the main character, which makes it even more like playing as myself (But still your choices don't affect the events of the game).

Plus, in my Pokémon fanfic, I link all the games in the different story arcs. I've since found myself playing the games with the fanfic in mind.

Sometimes when I start a new game and there's a cameo of an old character, I'm surprised that they treat me like a stranger. There's a moment where I think, "wait a minute! We already know each other. Why are you acting like you don't know me?" Even though it's a whole new save file... (This is especially true in the Pokémon Masters game, with all the sappy friendship stuff).

I won't even go into the stuff about Undertale and Delta Rune. In which they blatantly call out the control you have over the playable character, and you choices can have dire consequences. Even restarting the game. Let along corrupting certain characters, and thus your entire game no matter how often you restart it.

Well, That's Hard to Explain

I don't often read a book where I try to hide the cover. But I just read a couple books in a series called Teen Killers. It's about a girl who's been framed for the murder of an old friend.

I was on the second book, and brought it to work to read during my break. I though I probably should keep the cover lowered, since it would be hard to explain why I was reading something called Teen Killers in Love.

But the first day I brought it in, within minutes of starting to read, someone walks through the room and says, "Teen Killers?"

Oops. I didn't do a good job of hiding it.

Happy New Year!

 Welcome to 2023!

Well, let's make it the best we can.

And what better way to start than with a bunch of animals! XD

Wallaroo

Giant anteater. Look at that cute little smile.

Aldabra tortoise

Green anaconda
Red eyed tree frog
Chaco golden knee tarantula (she's really sweet, and silky soft)
Chinese mantis
Dairy cow isopod. It turns out humans breed certain color morphs of sow bugs, just like they do with dogs and cats.
