Most Freaking Depressing Movies Ever

It feels like the most depressing movies I've ever seen have been animations.
But I also know that's not really true. When I saw the new Les Miserables, I heard more crying in the theater than I had ever heard before.

And Only the Brave was hella depressing, because during the credits they showed photos of all the real guys that the movie was based off of.
But in America, people tend to think that cartoons are for children. That thought has always driven me crazy, since I love cartoons, as do my parents and plenty of other people that are far older than I. In general, I like animations more than I like live action because I love the art involved. But also, my favorite stories are usually the ones that you can enjoy whether you're a child or an adult (though there are exceptions).

But some animations are definitely not for children. Especially when you get to animations from other countries.
I've known this for a long time. But it seems that the truly depressing animations I've found leave me more stunned than depressing live-actions do. Maybe because subconsciously I don't expect them to be so depressing?

I just watched an animation I'd never heard of before, called When the Wind Blows. It started off with quite a bit of that British humor. It was rather cute at first, though there was that threat hanging overhead.
And the further it went, the more depressing it got. The ending was not unexpected, though it was unexpected to the two characters.
I saw it coming a mile away, but still...

And there was another animation I watched a while ago, I think from Spain. It was called Wrinkles, about a guy that gets alzheimers. That one was like a punch to the gut because my Grandpa had just died from alzheimers.

And Since I was talking about Takahata recently, Grave of the Fireflies is another. I think that was the first really depressing animation I'd ever run into. It was back in high school, and I was definitely not expecting anything like that, considering the other Ghibli movies I was acquainted with (Ghibli movies do not fit into one neat category, but that's what's awesome about them).
Actually, that's the only time I ever saw it. I really have to watch it again. At least this time I'll be prepared.
